The Education and Emerging Talent Programme is led by major music industry organisations that play a fundamental role in rewarding, developing and promoting songwriting in the UK. This programme consists of four unique events at Carling Academy Islington and Bar Academy Islington 19th September - 23rd September 2006. These include Seminars, Workshops, and Showcases tailored to support aspiring song writers and offer valuable networking opportunities with industry specialists. Partners contributing to this programme include: The British Academy of Composers & Songwriters, MCPS-PRS Alliance, PRS Foundation for New Music, Music Matrix, The Band Agency and University of Westminster / WestFocus.

Tuesday 19th September: Carling Academy Islington
11.00am-5.00pm: Academy Seminars (FREE ADMISSION but you need to register beforehand with Fergal Kilroy: fergal@britishacademy.com)
7.30pm – 10.00pm: Academy Showcase (INVITATION ONLY)

The Academy Seminars will be hosted by key industry figures, discussing the roles of those involved in successful song writing to performing. Such representatives will be available to answer any business and artistic queries.

The Academy Showcase will feature winners (from two categories) for The Songwriters' Academy 2006. This is a nationwide competition to unearth new and exciting talent, developed by BACS in partnership with BBC Radio 2, Apple Computer (UK), Youth Music, Arts Council England, Academy Music Group Ltd and University Of Westminster/WestFocus.

  • 11am – 1pm – Academy Seminar: The Business Of Being A Song Writer.
    Key industry figures discuss the roles of the team that surrounds successful song writers.
  • 1pm – 3pm – Drop-In Advice Centre:
    Academy representatives and key industry personnel will be on hand to answer specific business and artistic queries related to working as a song writer today.
  • 3pm – 5pm – Academy Seminar: The Craft Of Being A Song Writer.
    Professional writers discuss the issues, problems and triumphs of being a contemporary song writer.

  • 7.00pm – Academy Showcase:
    An exclusive celebration and showcase of the winners from the Song Writers’ Academy Contest with special guests.

WestfocusUNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER / WESTFOCUS & THE BAND AGENCY PRESENT 'THE ART OF SONG WRITING – BACK TO THE OLD SCHOOL'
Friday 22nd September: Bar Academy Islington

The pioneering Commercial Music BA Degree course from the University of Westminster/WestFocus has rewritten two of its core song writing modules to create "The Art of Song Writing - Back to the Old School". This new module and event created especially for 'On Song' with assistance from The Band Agency, takes song writers back to the core principals of melody, lyrics and arrangement.

  • 5.30pm – 6.30pm – Module Seminar:
    Video screenings of workshop sessions and a specialist panel to debate the resulting songs and their commercial viability, plus the merits of the 'Old School' approach.
  • 7pm – Live Showcase
    Performances by 'Back to the Old School' song writers.

  • 1.00pm – 1.45pm – Seminar: The Song That Broke My Band
    An established well known singer/song writer will be on a panel with those that helped create success.
  • 2.00pm-2.45pm – Seminar: Demo To Limo
    Advice on how to take a music career a step further financially, with key industry panellists from A&R, promoters, artists, accountants and fundraisers.
  • 3.00pm-5.00pm – Seminar: Demo Listening Panel + One on One
    A variety of music industry professionals offering free and specialist career advice.
